As colleges compete for the title of “Best All Around,” many are raising expectations and academic standards. That means both the average GPA and the average ACT and SAT scores for an entering freshman continue to climb. While ACT and SAT scores aren’t the only measuring stick universities use when considering student applicants, they do carry weight with those poring over thousands of applications looking for the cream of the crop. Unfortunately, students who fail to score well on standardized tests may be at a disadvantage when applying to their dream school, which means being prepared for the ACT and SAT is now more important than ever before.
Many universities, including the University of Alabama and Auburn University, now require the writing portion of the ACT. At some colleges, students failing to achieve certain scores on the math or English sections of the ACT will be required to take remedial courses. So you can see just how important the ACT and/or the SAT are to an entering freshman.
Below is a chart that illustrates the average ACTand SAT scores for an entering freshman for several regional universities.
